to read the history behind Altrusa of Albany!

ALTRUSA INTERNATIONAL OF ALBANY, INC.

Altrusa is an international non-profit organization making our local communities better through leadership, partnership, and service.

Our club offers an opportunity to make a real difference in Albany and surrounding Linn County. We undertake a variety of service, literacy, fundraising and international projects each year.

We are always seeking new volunteers to join our organization and make a difference. Our members are from varying occupations and lifestyles, all sharing an interest in community service and enjoying the friendship, fun and satisfaction that comes from working together for the benefit of others.

Your contribution to Altrusa International of Albany helps children and women in our community.

Thank you for supporting our efforts to inspire hope in our youth for their future success.

KidzShop! Our Largest Annual Service Project!
Our KidzShop event provides children of low-income families from Linn County an opportunity to start their school year with new clothing, shoes, and school supplies. We work with local agencies to identify children in need and then volunteers shop for them in early August.
Literacy - One Book at a Time
Our literacy committee is doing great things in our community!  We provide books to kids through our Little Red Bookshelves, during Dr. Seuss' birthday, at Downtown Albany's Halloween event, at Fun in the Park, during Shop with a Cop, through CASA, through the Youth Correctional Facility and more!  We also provide books to seniors through the Meals on Wheels program.

International Service Projects

Altrusa of Albany partners with Andando for Projects in Senegal

Altrusa is partnering with Andando for our international service project this year.  Andando is a local non-profit based in Jefferson, Oregon who work with the people of rural Senegal Africa to help alleviate poverty through micro-development.  They have built 14 medical clinics in rural Senegal, staff with local midwives and nurses which have improved the health care in the rural areas along with providing a safe and sanitary environment for the women to deliver their babies.

For this project, we will be creating New Mom OB Kits that will provide new moms with basic items to take home after the birth of their babies.

You can support this amazing project by donating new or gently used items (see flyer for items needed) to fill the OB kits that will provided to the mothers upon release from the medical clinic.   You can also purchase a kit for $30 by scanning the QR code provided.

An additional project we supported helped establish Market Gardens

Albany Service Projects

Altrusa Clubs have the ability to chose our own service projects based on the needs of our communities. We are not locked into focusing on certain projects. In addition to our Literacy and International Projects, here are a few other projects we have supported!

Food Insecurity Backpacks

Food insecurity is hard comes in all shapes and forms but takes a particular toll on people who suffer from chronic and acute illnesses. The food backpack program was created to help with this nutritionally high-risk population.

These backpacks started in the inpatient setting and have since expanded to 6 additional hospital departments and clinics within Linn County. While in the beginning these backpacks were aimed towards our homeless population, we’ve found they’ve been helpful in other population groups as well, for example post-operative patients who are unable to get to the grocery store after hospital discharge. Within these backpacks, we also include a list of local resources in the community: hot meal sites, food pantries, contact to the SNAP office, and contacts for gleaning groups. The purpose of these food backpacks is to provide immediate nutrition care after an acute hospitalization to boost recovery and prevent readmissions and connect them with existing community food resources for long-term access to food.

Jackson Street Care Packages

Altrusa of Albany supports Jackson Street Youth Services for Make a Difference Day 2021 as they work to support runaways and homeless youth due to abuse, neglect, and family situations. It’s our club’s intention to help the kids feel support/comfort during their stay and upon their transition out of the shelter. We filled duffel bags with personal hygiene items, a blanket, socks, ready to eat snacks, an insulated cup with Dutch Bros gift card, a journal/pen, and a stress relieving coloring book/colored pencils. The phrase “Never Give Up” was embroidered on the bags to encourage them with hope. Today we delivered the first installment of 50 duffel bags with 100 more to go!!!

Thank you to our community partners: Xtreme Grafx and Dutch Bros.

Membership and Fun

Fundraisers and Grants!

We are able to do the amazing projects in our community due to the support of individual donations, support from local businesses, grants and awards from other organizations and due to our volunteering at Oregon State Beaver Games! At the Football games we get a small percentage of the sales and all of the tips! Please come out to support the Beavers and us!

We work at a Grab and Go on the third level of the new side of the stadium and we also work in the Chicken and Waffles Booth! All food in the Chicken and Waffles Booth is Gluten Free and it is the best food at the stadium!
