Literacy Challenge

Did you know that children who regularly read for pleasure not only have better cognitive development, language development, and academic achievement, they also are less likely to have mental health problems, use less screen time, and sleep better. Reading sparks the imagination and builds confidence. It reduces anxiety and encourages creativity. Children who read for pleasure are more likely to grow into healthy, productive adults.

Our goal is to give away 8,000 books by May 31st, 2026. To date we have given away books to CAP, FISH, the Children's Museum, Cowlitz County Youth Advocates, Lion's Club, and Emergency Support Shelter. We have given away free books at Squirrel Fest, Parks and Rec Summer Camp, National Night Out, Kelso Library's Harvest Festival, the Longview Library Monster Mash, Kelso Library Story Time, the Kelso City Hall Tree Lighting, the Kelso Library Winter Festival. In total we've given away 3,287 books since June first, 2025. We buy new books and also accept donations of gently used books. These books are cleaned, sorted and distributed by Altrusans at various events and given to organizations in need. Contact us if you have books to donate and to learn more about how you can help us promote literacy in our community.

WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR ENERGETIC, SERVICE-MINDED PEOPLE TO JOIN ALTRUSA.
